Performances of music by Jean-Michel Damase.

Vacances pour saxophone et piano

Jean-Yves Fourmeau, alto saxophone

Hiroshi Nagao, piano

One of the composer's loveliest and most characteristic melodies.

Sicilienne variée pour harpe

Eleanor Turner, harp

A showpiece for the harpist and a great example of Damase's mastery of composing for the instrument.

Colombe (Excerpt 1)

L'Opéra de Marseille, 2 Feb 2007

Written in 1961, Colombe is one of many collaborations with author/librettist, Jean Anouilh.

Sonate en concert pour flûte et piano

Nobutaka Shimizu, flute

Jean-Michel Damase, piano

Recorded in Tokyo (2005). An excerpt from the very demanding (and rewarding) standard in the flute repertoire. The work is written with an optional part for cello.

Variations sur un thème de Mozart pour deux pianos et orchestre

F. Parrot-Hanlet, M. Schmitt, F. Fonsalas, pianos

The world premiere of the reduction for three pianos. Recorded in the presence of the composer on the occasion of his 80th birthday in Paris (2007).

Rhapsodie pour cor et orchestre

Ben Jacks, horn

Orchestra Victoria; Barry Tuckwell, conductor

Excerpts from the Melba Recording release. Includes interviews with Ben Jacks and Barry Humphries, who comissioned the work.

Concertino pour harp et orchestre à cordes (Part 2)

Chaerin Kim, harp

Trio pour flûte, hautbois et piano

Impromptu Duo

A complete performance of one of the most popular of Damase's chamber works. Recorded at the National Flute Association's 2011 convention.

Sérénade pour flûte et orchestre à cordes

Jean-Pierre Rampal, flute

Written at the request of Rampal, who asked for a brilliant virtuoso finale; so Damase, a close friend, wrote him a calm, quiet one instead.

Drominiana pour piano à 4 mains

Akika Watanabe, Saeko Ueda; piano

Tremendously enjoyable work in three movements. Broadly, they are jazzy, lyrical, and exciting and polyrhythmic.

Sonatine pour deux harpes – Presto

Ieuan Jones, harp

Emanuela Degli Esposti, harp

A brilliant performance of the final movement of this very demanding work. Ieuan Jones is the dedicatee of other works by Damase.
